CMMI® - Why you should care
Data: 9/14/2006
Companies Kugler Maag CIE and Software Mind organize the first conference in Poland devoted to issues concerning Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI). The conference will be held on 27th of September 2006 in Warsaw.

CMMI has not been put to common use in Central and East European companies yet, whereas the conference organizers and speakers claim it is the key to increasing the enterprise’s competitiveness. Practically any organization which has its own IT department and co-operates with outside producers and providers can derive undeniable profit from applying the “CMMI philosophy”. As it shows from the foreign experience of Kugler Maag CIE and Software Mind, investments in better software engineering processes and collaboration with outer IT suppliers are inevitable and will be forced in the nearest future by the customers and competitors themselves.

The representatives of Software Engineering Institute (SII) – co-creators of the model in question – will participate in the conference and bring closer the CMMI method as well as present arguments in favour of applying the CMMI principles.
World-class experts from companies participating in the conference, i.e. AXA Belgium, DaimlerChrysler, Deutsche Bank, and Motorola, will share their practical experience and knowledge concerning the most interesting areas in which engineering processes may be improved. They will provide examples of how to avoid basic errors in software development planning and management, how to manage the budget and project timetable, and how to collaborate with outside IT suppliers. Conference participants will learn why CMMI principles are worth implementing, what are the areas and scope in which to apply them, and what benefits can be derived from this application.

 - The main reason for lower popularity of CMMI/SPI (Software Process Improvement) models in Central and East Europe is, in our view, the lack of information about the possibilities and benefits of using such models in enterprises. While working on innovative projects for demanding Customers we noticed the growing needs for better organisation of complex production processes. As an IT company, we put strong emphasis on the optimization of engineering processes. Many times have we verified various approaches, sometimes extremely disparate, to the process of software engineering; basing on these experiences we can say that the CMMI model provides a very good solution for many organisation. Benefits from application of this model can be derived by both software development companies as well as Customers cooperating with numerous IT suppliers. With such dynamic market growth as we presently observe, we should call Polish companies’ attention to this. We count that this will help us to start a broader discussion on the subject of CMMI in Poland. As it results from our experience, Polish managers noticed measurable benefits of high quality IT products long ago, but they are still looking for effective and tested tools allowing them to follow that path. The CMMI model is one of such tools – said Grzegorz Młynarczyk, Vice President of Software Mind.

- Poland is well know for its excellent software engineers and computer specialists who have proven their refined level of competence by winning prestigious software development competitions, yet it does not suffice for IT companies who want to operate in the global market. Development of IT solutions is a complex task the execution of which requires teamwork and an appropriate number of managing processes with which to coordinate complicated activities. If Polish enterprises want to gain competitive advantage in the global market as well as increase their productivity and quality of solutions implemented, every IT manager should plan to introduce applications enhancing the quality of engineering processes – said Christophe Debou, Director, Central and Eastern Europe, Kugler Maag CIE.
