In the era of computers and Internet, protection of personal data and one’s privacy is an increasing problem. Identity theft has turned into the fastest rising criminal offence in such countries as Great Britain or USA. This underestimated or sometimes unknown threat affected more than 10 million people in the United States alone, bringing about a 50 billion loss. Garlik, a British company established last year, construed an innovative tool for people to control their personal data. This data is available from various places, databases and the Internet. Software Mind has been the main executor of the system premiered at the end of 2006. Simultaneously, the premiere has been one of the first commercial applications of the Semantic Web.

Having accomplished the first phase of the project the effect of which was commercial launch of a DataPatrol application designed to prevent identity theft, Software Mind and Garlik signed another contract for developing additional system functionalities. Like in previous contracts, in this one too is Software Mind indicated as a preferred supplier of system engineering solutions for Garlik. In 2007 Garlik is planning to provide extra functionalities, expand its offer and launch the system into the American market. Simultaneously, Garlik has reached a significant milestone in January of this year: the limit of 30 thousand registered users has been exceeded, which helped the company to achieve its goals in advance. DataPatrol system was first offered to British customers and it is the first delivered system of many planned by Garlik. The company aims to prepare the whole platform of products to protect data in the Internet. Garlik’s representatives estimate there will be 8.5 million potential users in Great Britain alone. DataPatrol provides registered users with information on the presence and security of their data in the Internet, as well as on other data sources (e.g. entrepreneurs’ registers, birth and marriage registers etc.). Besides, system users have access to ratings and other credit related data (a counterpart of the Polish Credit Information Bureau). Presentation of assessments and comments on the data found is an important element of the service. The comments explain the possible consequences of the fact that a given piece of information is available in a specific place. It is especially important given the wave of identity thefts. Software Mind has executed the entire implementation of DataPatrol system. Presently, the application is available only for United Kingdom citizens. Demo of the DataPatrol functionalities can be seen at: Demo DataPatrol. DataPatrol is based on an innovative technology Semantic Web and natural language processing tools. These allow for intelligent merging and processing of data to show its meaning. According to Software Mind’s and Garlik’s experts, DataPatrol will provide revolutionary possibilities of analysing data sets, interpreting the meaning of collected information, drawing conclusions as well as presenting data and its relations in an intuitional way. Garlik is a UK-based company governed by, among others, Tom Ilube and Mike Harris: creators of Egg, the first Internet bank in Great Britain and currently the biggest one in the world. Tom Ilube was managing the Egg’s IT department and led the project of launching the bank into the market. Mike Harris spent a long time on projects helping to put state-of-the-art technologies to mass use. Apart from Egg he established First Direct: the first telephone bank in the world. He was also the head of the telecommunications provider Mercury Communications. - I can guarantee that even with my world-class Egg development team I would have spent twice as much money, had a team twice the size and still only be half as far along as we are today - Tom Ilube said about his co-operation with Software Mind.
